Patience vs Speed

I used to complain to my mentor that nothing was happening.

When’s it going to show up?

I hated when he said, “It will take as long as it’s going to take.”

But one day he presented me with an analogy:

“What happens if you take room-temp water, pour it in a pot, and place it on an open flame?”

“What?” I said.

Nothing. Nothing happens. There is no visible change. So how do you know it’s doing anything?”

“I’ve boiled enough water to know.”

“And I’ve grown enough businesses to know.”

He said, “Just remember that for the next 74 degrees, you won’t be able to tell it’s changing. And in the moment the temperature goes from 99 to 100, everything happens.”

Sometimes all there is to do is keep the flame steady. And have the faith that the boiling will take care of itself.

Happy cooking.
