The Lie Your Fear is Telling You

To the ego, all danger is bad.

It’s like a light switch with only two settings—on or off.

The closer you push to your limits, the louder it screams.

By definition, that’s its job. It keeps us safe. It stops us from cliff diving into rocks, touching boiling water, or entering a hotdog eating contest.

And while it expertly identifies potential dangers, it’s a novice at distinguishing between real and perceived threats.

What I’m offering you today is a trade—your toggle switch for a dimmer.

Just like lighting, there’s a gradient between real and fake fear.

So where does one begin?

With a new sensor.

Luckily, you’ve got three of them.

Yes, if you close your eyes, take a breath, and drop into your body, you’ll realize your brain isn’t the only one processing information.

The volume might be muted, but I’ll bet that your heart and gut have something to say.

Try this for me the next time you have a moment of uncertainty:

  1. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and inhale for 5 seconds. Now exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat that 3 times.

  2. From that grounded state, individually ask your head, heart, and gut the same question.

  3. Notice the tone of voice from each.

  4. Notice the speed and rate of the answer.

  5. Notice how varied or unvaried the responses are.

Now ask yourself this question: “If I am embodying courage, which voice best represents that?”

And finally, follow through and act swiftly.

*By the way, just because you choose what is most courageous doesn’t mean that everything will magically work out. Often, courage can create momentary discomfort.

But what you are teaching your nervous system to do is to increase its capacity to move toward discomfort. It’s okay to explore fear before making a definitive decision.

The more time spent curiously exploring the areas that terrify us, the more you may realize that there is a lot less separating you from your dreams.

Happy breathing,
