Running a business isn’t for the faint of heart.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration:
“… 51.1% of small businesses fail their first 5 years.”
And the number one culprit is “lack of funding or working capital.”
In the coaching space it’s accelerated by:
poor decisions of where to allocate funds.
underestimating the time and effort to see returns.
Cash is king—it’s runway, it’s choice, it’s potential to right the wrongs.
The more time you can go without needing to see a return,
the greater your chances of success…
especially if you know where to invest resources.
So today, I want to point out the biggest way to waste money:
Funny enough, I bet if you polled a group of new entrepreneurs,
they would put this expense as one of their top needs: a website.
Did you know that in 2024, a decent website
will put you back an average of $2,000-$5,000?
With some going well beyond $25,000+?
Don’t get me wrong,
there’s absolutely a time and place for a website,
but it’s definitely not in your first year—or even three.
Why? Because websites aren’t about the client.
It’s often about us wanting to look good and feel confident.
Most designers of websites are not copywriters.
They are less concerned about conversion
and more concerned about aesthetics.
From a logistical standpoint…
Websites have a menu of links.
Links that lead you to other pages or social platforms.
Most of us wander around a site, never to return again.
As my mentor always says: “Options are the death of decisions.”
Add on an ad budget and drive traffic to a site that’s not optimized for it …
and now we’re just adding insult to injury.
And if you’re a new business owner, your ability to capture emails
and consistently market to them is your lifeblood.
So instead of building a website, learn to build a landing page.
The difference?
A landing page only has one function: to capture a lead.
There are no links or other places to go.
It is one page. One choice. Enter an email or leave.
If you want to spend money …
spend it on learning to write a headline
that captures your client’s attention.
Learn to write a headline that makes them want to
willingly give you their email in exchange for information.
Stop trying to avoid learning by hiring someone.
If you’re going to be in the coaching game, you will write dozens,
if not hundreds, of landing pages in your lifetime.
Learn skills that will make you inevitable, not just lucky.
Cheers,

PS - Over the holidays I ran a “21 days to Get More Clients” challenge. I recorded all 21 days and I’m going to turn it into a course. It will be free but …
… To get you started I wanted to share a link to my recordings. If you want to build your own ‘client getting’ machine give “day 1” a listen here.
