The Best Advice I've Received This Year

I've steadily grown this newsletter, adding 50 - 150 new weekly subscribers.

But I was alarmed when I looked at my conversions. 37% of visitors to readers is well below best practices.

Even my mentor was concerned.

But his advice wasn’t what I expected.

"… a good qualifier is more important than a high (conversion) %.”

This meant that while boosting conversion rates through ad and copy tweaks might bring more subscribers, it risks diluting the lead quality.

After all, what's the point of a bigger list if it's not your target audience?

His advice cemented 2 lessons for me.

  1. Investment in Expertise Is Invaluable: While I'm cautious about choosing who to learn from (there's a clear difference between the best and the rest), the impact of expert guidance is a game changer. Previously, I've made hasty adjustments based on flawed data. The right mentor can provide clarity and direction, saving time and resources.

  2. General Advice Lacks Context: Broad advice isn't inherently flawed, but it often lacks nuance and fails to consider the human behind the business. What are your individual business goals, strategies, and intentions? While my current marketing strategy might seem to underperform to an outsider, it aligns with my specific goals. What works for one business isn’t always what’s best for another.

My intention in sharing this isn't to convince you that a 37% conversion rate is ideal but to illustrate the immense value of finding the right mentor.

The advice that resonated so deeply with me this year stood out because it was meticulously tailored to my unique situation.

Of course, seeking knowledgeable experts is crucial, but the real game-changer is receiving advice that's not just smart, but also tailored to the specific context and challenges of your business.

Cheers,
